The raging debate on Climate Change is one that has drawn protagonists on different ends; all with valid arguments ranging from economic sustainability and opportunity, to political power and international regime dynamics. Politicians, Economists and Policy Makers are fast forgetting the people-impact of Climate Change. The day to day living that is indignifying populations from Asia to Africa and other parts of the world calls for immediate action and immediate resolution. The All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC), the Programme for Christian-Muslim Relations in Africa (PROCMURA) and the Southern African Faith Communities' Environment Institute (SAFCEI) were not going to sit on their laurels and abdicate the moral responsibility they have as religious leaders.
To this effect, the three organisations called for a conference that was held in Nairobi, Kenya between 7th and 8th June 2011 at the United Nations Complex. The conference which drew participants from across Africa provided not only an opportunity for religious leaders to deliberate Climate Change and Climate Justice for Sustainable Development, but also added their voice to the call for consensus during the upcoming Conference of Parties (COP17) meeting in Durban, South Africa in November 2011. The time for action is now insisted the religious leaders. Our greatest responsibility is the legacy that we have to leave for posterity.
PROCMURA was in deed delighted to have taken a focal role in the organisation of the conference and hope and pray that this landmark conference will have the effect that it deserves and that the world that will gather in South Africa will act and not just talk
